Food and Drink in Cornwall

We enjoy visiting Cadgwith for the food as much as anything else. Here are some of our favourite places to eat and sources of good food.

Pasties

Cornwall's unique contribution to British cuisine is one of our favourite foods. It's not a successful visit to Cadgwith unless we have at least two pasty lunches. Elisabeth and Perran have been eating pasties since their first birthdays (literally in Elisabeth's case!). After years of intense research, we have decided this is our definitive list — and especially the endorsement of Ann's at the top. If you have any recommendations for the best pasty in Cornwall, we'd love to hear them! But caveat emptor ... sadly, there are plenty of "average" pasties in Cornwall.

Eating Out

We have combined pubs, cafes, restaurants, and cream teas into this category. All of our meals out are at lunchtime, with the children, so the distinction between a pub and restaurant isn't significant for us. We also aren't heavy consumers of cream teas (they just seem to ruin the kids' dinner!) so this list is a big light on that local specialty. This list is sorted by proximity to Cadgwith.

And there are lots more good restaurants and good pubs in Cornwall!

Ice Cream

Fudge and Chocolate

Herbs

Halzephron Herb Farm, now on Fore Street in St Ives but formerly in Gunwalloe, offers a truly tasty selection of dips, dressings, and sauces as well as fresh herbs and herbal remedies. Most everything is available for sampling so it's a treat — if not a meal! — for adults and children. Elisabeth and her friends were given parental permission to participate when they passed the age of two-and-a-half; Perran was allowed to start when he was a month shy of this. However, we took the precaution of having lunch first to take the edge off his enthusiasm! This is a real family and community oriented business so it is fun to support them. (August 2003)
